Wedding Vows

Just think, the hard work is practically done. You’ve ordered the invitations, booked the venue, chosen the perfect cake, and narrowed down the guests list. So what’s next?…Those dreaded wedding vows. Initially, writing the perfect vows can seem overwhelming, which is why some couples opt for the officiants’ choice of wording. However, writing vows doesn’t have to be a daunting task. I’ve taken the time to outline a few vow-writing guidelines that are sure to make your future spouse beam with joy.

First, there are two methods to writing vows. There’s the option to take charge and writing them solitarily (a more intimate perspective) or hire a professional writer. Either way, your goal is to express your joy and happiness, without being overly lengthy. Most ceremonies have an allotted time frame and its better to be concise as opposed to a long-winded approach. The objective is to capture the attention of your future partner, and guests, so its best to refrain from being repetitive by giving a lot of information but with few words. Be brief but engaging. Remember to start the vow-writing process early. While vow-writing may come easy for some, others will need time to not only write their vows but have what they’ve written proofread and recited aloud.

Next, it helps not to be too personal with your memories and/or reflections. Any wording that can be potentially offensive or make guests feel uncomfortable shouldn’t be included in your vows. Remember, it is perfectly acceptable to include vows catered to your religion (most guests expect you to), so start by contemplating on the “tone” you’d like to achieve. For example, some couples prefer to lighten the moment by exchanging humorous vows, while others favor a more romantic feel. Either way, be sure to clearly express your love and commitment to your new spouse and the marriage as a whole.

Lastly, give yourself a time frame for completion. Start with a paragraph every couple of weeks to ensure the wording is perfect. Feel free to use poems, songs, and your surroundings for inspiration. The great part about starting the  process early is that your daily interaction with your fiancé can be highly inspirational. The way he/she looks when you say a certain phrase or the way he/she responds to your feelings can be great material for writing. Most importantly, be original. Assuming the majority of guests know you fairly well, they’ll be able to spot any glimmer of inconstancy with wording and your disposition. Be witty but not overly so, trust me you’ll  knock it out of the park.
