The Resellers and Why Buy Online.

The Resellers

Because of the cost and limited use of a wedding gown, there is a demand for good wedding dresses sold on the aftermarket (primarily samples and gently worn gowns), at less than full retail cost. eBay and Craigslist are the two most commonly mentioned sources, but there are other options as well.

Jacqueline sells a curated selection of only the very best, most lust worthy dresses–hard to find, fashion forward gowns from designers such as Temperley, Valentino, Vera Wang, Monique Lhuillier, Oscar de la Renta, Rivini, Lazaro, Amsale, Watters, Kleinfeld Exclusive Brands Alita Graham & Pnina Tornai, and more. She sells a mix of new gowns, samples from partner designers like Kleinfelds, and nearly new used dresses. Former brides who sell their gowns must go through an approval process before consigning, protecting customers from fraudulent buyers.

Jacqueline is located in New York City, with offices in Brooklyn, fittings and appointments in the West Village (by request), and an e-commerce website. She prides herself on offering a high end online experience, so women can shop luxury while also saving money and getting a great value.

 

Julie Jones, Encore Bridal

 

Julie consigns and otherwise sources upscale bridal gowns and sells them through both an e-commerce site and a retail showroom in Union Square, San Francisco. She sells pre-owned wedding dresses that retail for $2,000 or more (such as Pronovias, Claire Pettibone, and Vera Wang’s Luxe Collection). These are all in-stock new, once-worn, and sample dresses that have passed their thorough inspection program.

Many of her online customers are busy professionals who do not have a lot of time to shop and love that they can have a dress delivered then return it if it doesn’t work for them. Others are brides who love luxurious quality, but don’t have the means (or are not willing) to spend full retail.

 

Josie Daga, PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com

Josie lists new, sample, and used wedding dresses from over 300 different designers–Vera Wang, Monique Lhuillier, Lazaro, Maggie Sottero just to name a few–on her website. Sellers pay a small fee to list. Potential buyers contact them through the site, then the parties privately complete their transactions. There are currently over 15,000 active listings on the site, with dresses in all sizes and prices points. If a bride prefers local only, she can use an advanced search to see only dresses from her area.

Why Buy Online

Most of the ladies I interviewed cited the inability to find what they want locally as a reason customers buy from them online. Other reasons include cost and availability of custom options.

The bottom line is there are many different valid reasons and options for purchasing online. Theresa sums it up with an analogy. “You can go to a used car lot and get a great deal or get a lemon. The problem isn’t the fact that its online. Like any purchase, do a little research before investing.”

• Investigate the reviews to make sure they are authentic. You may want to go so far as to call or otherwise contact the reviewer.
